Excessive consumption of alcohol linked with increased risk for breast cancer

Excessive consumption of alcohol linked with increased risk for breast cancer

With a rapid rise in the breast cancer incidence rate recently, it has become the most common cause of cancer deaths among women. Although factors such as increasing age, a family history of breast cancer, obesity, radiation exposure, etc., are largely associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, a heavy intake of alcohol often triggers or aggravates the symptoms of the deadly disease. Studies have shown that even moderate drinking can increase the risk of developing breast cancer in women.

Affirming the earlier findings, a report by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) observed, “Alcoholic drinks increase the risk of post- and pre-menopausal breast cancers.” However, it added the probable risk can be reduced significantly by breastfeeding and moderate physical activities such as running or fast bicycling.

Adopting healthy lifestyle to prevent breast cancer risk

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. While the risk of acquiring breast cancer doubles each decade until the menopause, its occurrence is more common after the menopause. This is because factors like diet, body weight and alcohol consumption play an important role in determining the occurrence of the disease to a great extent. Thus, women who are obese or overweight or consume alcohol on a daily basis are more prone to develop breast cancer after menopause, observed the AICR report.

The increased risk of cancer due to alcohol consumption was well explained by an old study published in the International Journal of Cancer. According to the findings, the surged risk is associated with the increased level of hormones such as estrogen and androgen attributable to alcohol consumption. “Regular drinking equivalent to two to four standard drinks or more per week was associated with 1.3-fold and 1.5-fold increased risk of breast cancer recurrence and breast cancer death respectively,” observed the study.

Previous studies had demonstrated the benefits of adopting healthy dietary changes in reducing the risk of breast cancer. Therefore, it is important to consume foods that are high in calcium (green vegetables, dried fruits, sesame and dairy products) and fruits and vegetables that are high in carotenoids (bell peppers, carrots, apricots, broccoli and spinach), which could act as a protective shield against certain types of breast cancers, particularly, estrogen-receptor (ER) negative breast cancers, added the report.

Seeking professional help

Besides eating a healthy diet, it is beneficial to undergo appropriate treatment to ensure recovery. Consumption of nutritious food assists in healing the body and preventing a relapse. As each phase of detoxification relies on a number of nutrients, any kind of deficiency can lead to incomplete chemical transformation or prolonged circulation in the blood. When a person is grappling with the problem of addiction to alcohol or drugs, it is essential to undergo treatment to avoid major life-disruptive consequences. One of the first steps toward sobriety is detoxification that expunges toxins stored due to the addictive substances.

The road to recovery from alcohol addiction is not easy and hence, it needs to be tackled with extreme determination and support from family and friends. It is essential to seek a detoxification program that helps to remove the toxins accumulated in the body from extended periods of substance abuse.
