FDA recalls kratom products to safeguard public health

FDA recalls kratom products to safeguard public health

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken another effective step to curb opioid addiction that has been taking a heavy toll on Americans. The federal agency recently announced a recall of a number of dietary supplements containing kratom throughout the nation, especially those manufactured under the brand names like Botany Bay, Enhance Your Life and Divinity by Divinity Products Distribution of Grain Valley, Missouri. Kratom, a relatively new drug in the U.S., has been responsible for a large number of emergency room (ER) visits. It causes a range of dangerous side effects, such as vomiting, nervousness, respiratory depression, psychotic episodes, hallucinations, etc.

Validating the agency’s decision, Scott Gottlieb, the agency’s commissioner said in a statement, “The extensive scientific data we’ve evaluated about kratom provides conclusive evidence that compounds contained in kratom are opioids and are expected to have similar addictive effects as well as risks of abuse, overdose and, in some cases, death. At the same time, there’s no evidence to indicate that kratom is safe or effective for any medical use.”

Gottlieb has also requested the manufacturers to cease the sale of all kratom-containing products intended for human consumption. He further highlighted that the above measure was enunciated to protect the public from the hazards of drugs like kratom. He warned people to avoid using kratom as an alternative to prescription opioids and a dietary ingredient without any safety check. Given the implications of kratom, it should be avoided even for treating medical conditions.

Prohibitions on using kratom for therapeutic purposes

The announcement highlighted that the FDA has not approved kratom for any sort of therapeutic use due to the associated risks. Adding further, manufacturing companies should market kratom only after conducting a thorough regulatory check to weigh its benefits and risks. Generally, people

Use kratom due to the misconception that it assists in treating opioid dependence. There is no concrete evidence of the above-mentioned benefit of this drug.

While the federal bodies and agencies are working day in and day out to curb the issue of opioid addiction, the common masses also need to stay a little more cautious to make this world a healthy place to live. Opioid abuse and addiction have become one of the most common public health concerns in the U.S. Ignoring their symptoms or delaying treatment are the basic mistakes that tend to worsen one’s condition. Therefore, it is extremely important for each individual to take preventive measures and seek help, as and when required.

The FDA specified the three approved products for the treatment of opioid addiction. It has further notified people to consult their doctor before consuming any opioid. Drugs like kratom has both sedative and stimulating effects. While low dosages of the drug increases the level of energy and socialization, the high dosages cause lethargy and euphoria. Moreover, it is highly addictive in nature.  The FDA has instructed people to dispose of any kratom-related products in their possession.
