Thinking of Rapid Detox?
Opioids are substances that help a person deal with an unbearable pain. Interestingly, these can also be used by a person for non-medicinal purposes, such as overcoming anxiety and fear, building tolerance toward work pressure, etc.
Though recommended as a pain medication that can cure moderate-to-severe pain, opioids are also highly addictive. Therefore, it is important for a person to ensure that opioids are consumed in line with a doctor’s prescription.
Addiction to opioids has been growing at an alarmingly pace in the United States (U.S.). According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a large number of Americans use prescription drugs for non-medicinal purposes. This, in turn, has led to a surge in the sale of prescription opioids across the nation.
This addiction has not only affected the lower- and middle-classes, but the rich and elite as well, including celebrities. The concluding article of the series “Fighting prescription drug abuse,” enlists some of the celebrities who decided to take the path of detox after being addicted to opioids.
1. Brian Welch
Welch, an American musician who is part of the popular metal band “Korn” and is widely known by his stage name ‘Head’, got addicted to several substances, including alcohol, sleeping pills and Xanax, during the height of his career. However, he chose to cleanse himself by quitting these addictions in 2005.
2. Jamie Lee Curtis
Curtis, an American actress and author who is well-known for her role as a “scream queen” in the horror classic “Halloween,” developed an addiction to morphine after undergoing a cosmetic procedure. The actress started consuming the drug to relieve pain and feel better, but later became addicted to it. She has underlined her recovery from drug addiction as the greatest accomplishment of her life.
3. Nicole Richie
Richie, an American fashion designer, author, actress, and a wearer of many other hats, was arrested for the first time in 2006 for driving under the influence of Vicodin. Though the actress claimed that it was taken by her to relieve pain due to menstrual cramps, her long history of addiction made this statement difficult to believe. Her pregnancy, a short time later, made her realize the need to detox and undergo behavioral changes by quitting addiction.
4. Cindy McCain
Being the wife to Senator John McCain, Cindy McCain, an American businesswoman, philanthropist and humanitarian, is a renowned name in the U.S. She developed an addiction to two opioid painkillers –– Vicodin and Percocet –– after breaking her two discs and undergoing a back surgery.
McCain was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and faced a potential 20-year prison sentence for acquiring controlled substances by wrongful means. Though she escaped the charges, the doctor who had prescribed the pills to her lost his license. McCain is now enjoying a drug-free life.
5. Matthew Perry
Perry is a Canadian-American actor who is best known for his role as “Chandler Bing” in the sitcom “Friends,” developed addiction to Vicodin pills after his wisdom tooth was extracted. At the peak of the addiction, the actor would take as many as 30 pills a day. After checking into a rehab center, the actor was able to successfully recover from his addiction.
It is not essential to opt for opioids to fight pain. One can also alleviate his or her pain through exercise and other natural means.
